Resident Attorney Program
We invest in talent across all backgrounds.
/Program Overview
Through our Resident Attorney program, we provide an opportunity for candidates with less traditional backgrounds to develop their legal skills by gaining meaningful work experience at NP. Resident attorneys complete a 12-month apprenticeship with a heavy emphasis on training, education, and mentorship. After their first year in the program, resident attorneys may choose to renew their participation for another 6 months to a year, join our attorney ranks, or pursue other opportunities outside of NP.
Since the program’s inception, nearly all of our resident attorneys have joined NP in a number of practice areas, including Public Finance and Project Finance, Private Clients, Healthcare, and Corporate. Resident Attorney program participants are among our highest-performing colleagues.

In Their Words
Hear from former program participants.
Meredith LaMaster—Healthcare associate, former resident attorney
"The resident attorney program is an excellent opportunity, particularly for recent law school graduates. With its lower hours requirement, the program allows you more time to adjust into your new role as an attorney while still providing a viable path to the associate-level and beyond. Our practice group leaders do a phenomenal job of ensuring that resident attorneys have the same access to quality work assignments and they willingly provide progression opportunities when the attorney is ready to take the next step in their career.“
David Song—Project Finance and Public Finance associate, former resident attorney
"I saw the program as a great opportunity for new attorneys to find their footing in a big law firm. I attended law school in the evenings while working full-time and so summering at a law firm wasn’t an option for me. By extension, starting a new legal career in big law seemed out of reach, but that’s where the resident attorney program bridged the gap. After several calls with attorneys at the firm, I saw the resident attorney role as an investment both on my part and on the firm’s part in my future success. The hands-on training, the workload, and overall support from the firm and the Public Finance group leaves no doubt that I had made the right decision.”
