John Lo is multi-lingual (English, Cantonese, Mandarin and Shanghai dialect) lawyer dually qualified in Hong Kong and California. He has been in private practice as a transnational corporate and commercial lawyer since the early 1980s. Since relocating to Hong Kong from San Francisco in 1994, he has been focusing on, among other areas, early stage tech companies on their corporate, financing and IP matters, often straddling Hong Kong, mainland China, the U.S. and regionally.
I represent startup companies and their founders from the start-up phase through pre-IPO phase on both legal and business aspects. In addition to advising on typical legal concerns such as structuring, formation, maintenance, IP protection, contractual relationships and financing, I also strive to add value by counseling on funding sources and practice, business opportunities and related matters.
I also represent investors ranging from angels, family offices, VCs, PEs and corporate investors on investing and fund formation matters. My industry exposure runs a wide gamut, including IT, life sciences, clean tech and renewable energies.
Another area where I have much experience is PRC inbound direct investment work. I have also represented many foreign companies making investment or doing business in PRC regularly in the last two decades.
In the PRC outbound arena, I was a pioneer in representing PRC companies in the U.S. in the early 1990s. I am knowledgeable about their special concerns, and effective in guiding such companies in the international arena.
I am looking forward to seeing the publication in early 2016 of my book Angel Financing in Asia Pacific: A Guidebook for Investors and Entrepreneurs, which I hope will add to the vibrant startup scene in Hong Kong and regionally.
