Carron Joan Mitchell is a partner in our Entertainment practice group based in the firm’s Los Angeles office. Carron has extensive experience representing clients in the entertainment industry, including recording artists, music producers, songwriters, actors, models, content creators, entrepreneurs, startups, established companies, and other entertainment industry professionals.
I focus on the diverse legal needs of talent and other entertainment industry companies and professionals. I leverage my prior experience and insider’s perspective, working within the music, sports, media, and radio industries, to anticipate clients’ needs holistically.
I help clients negotiate various types of agreements, including, but not limited to, music recording, music publishing, touring, merchandising, sponsorship and endorsement, talent and production, television, modeling, talent representation, licensing, blogging, content creation, and content monetization. I also help structure and negotiate joint ventures agreements, and work with clients in the sale and acquisition of music catalogs.
I have significant experience working with talent and advising clients on structuring and developing the initial launch of new business enterprises. This includes building out recording and distribution companies, publishing companies and creative agencies. I also support talent across the various verticals of their career, and ensure that they set a foundation for growth, not only as a creative professional, but as a brand and business.
I act as an outside general counsel to traditional music, video game, Web3, blockchain and tech companies. I work with inside counsel in various industries to advise across the music and copyright components of their business. I also serve as a general counsel for talent themselves, as they establish and grow their businesses, acting as a liaison with attorneys servicing across the various verticals of the client’s business ventures.
In the last year, the explosion of NFTs has heavily impacted my practice as entertainers are finding additional revenue streams and ways to monetize their art. Also, clients are asking to be paid in cryptocurrency, and while in the past, companies pushed back on this method of payment, there are companies now open to this new way of accounting. I’m also excited to see how Web3 and the metaverse impact the sports and entertainment industry, as more and more clients are starting to explore ways to monetize in the virtual worlds.
